Getting around North Wales

Roads

The main trunk roads are the A55 dual carriageway from Chester to Holyhead; the A5 London to Holyhead route, which joins the A55 outside Bangor; and the A470 Llandudno to Cardiff road.

Up-to-date traffic information is available at www.nwales-traffic.co.uk/main.asp on Ceefax or Teletext, www.theaa.com and by phone on 09003 401100 (60p a minute).

Trains

Traveline is an excellent site for all public transport information.

Frequent services connecting towns along the coast, between Chester and Holyhead, are operated by First North Western, Virgin and Alphaline Wales and West. There are branch lines to Wrexham and down the Conwy Valley to Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Main destinations you can reach direct from the North Wales coast line include Crewe, Manchester, Cardiff and London.

Train times and information are available on www.railtrack.co.uk or by calling 08457 48 49 50.

There are also several steam and miniature railways in the region. For more information go to the Things to do section on this channel or visit www.greatlittletrainsofwales.co.uk/index.html.

If you're travelling around Wales on public transport it's worth looking at the good-value Freedom of Wales Flexipass which can be used on buses and trains and also gives discounts for admission to tourist attractions. More information on www.travelwales-flexipass.co.uk.

Buses and coaches

Arriva (www.arriva.co.uk) is the biggest bus operator, but there are also numerous smaller companies running local services.

To find bus timetables the relevant county council website is usually a good starting point (see the Local Information article in this section). Only Wrexham and Conwy fail to provide timetables online. You could also try www.showbus.co.uk/timetables/wales.htm or www.pti.org.uk which is a good site for all forms of public transport.

For coach travel you can find National Express services on www.gobycoach.com.

Ferries

There are frequent ferry services daily for vehicles and foot passengers between Holyhead and Ireland, with high-speed and conventional ships sailing to the Port of Dublin and Dun Laoghaire. Visit www.irishferries.ie/ and www.stenaline.co.uk for more details. Also www.ukireland-fastlinks.com is useful as it covers both companies' services.
