A NORTH Wales Labour AM last night admitted he would have to pull down his election campaign posters by midnight on the night before polling day. Clwyd West candidate Alun Pugh has distributed election leaflets and posters styling himself “Alun Pugh AM” – but he will officially cease to hold that job on the day of the election. In a separate issue, it emerged yesterday that Mr Pugh, the culture minister, was the subject of a complaint over the sending of unsolicited mail, using Assembly postage and envelope, just before the election campaign began. Last week, Mr Pugh publicly apologised for a mistake in his campaign office when election material was sent out using Assembly postage. He offered to pay £20 to cover the cost. North Wales Plaid Cymru candidate, Janet Ryder said: “According to Assembly guidelines Assembly Members can only refer to themselves as AMs until midnight on May 2. Alun Pugh’s posters will break these guidelines unless they are removed the day before polling day.” Martin Downes, 42, a sales executive from Towyn, said yesterday he was surprised to receive a handwritten official Assembly envelope last month and had written to the Assembly to complain. Inside, he said, was a six-page surgery briefing from the AM on local issues. “I have never had any dealings with him at all. I’m not Labour any way, and have never spoken to him. The information was irrelevant to me and was a waste of taxpayers’ money. |
