Steve Evans out for Wales' big Euro qualifiers

Sep 3 2007

by Mark Currie, Daily Post

WREXHAM defender Steve Evans is set to withdraw from the Wales squad for the forthcoming European Championship qualifiers against Germany and Slovakia.

Evans, recalled to the Dragons side for his first League Two start of the season against Hereford United on Saturday, lasted just 17 minutes before limping off with what is feared to be a recurrence of the ankle ligament damage he suffered during the pre-season build-up.

Racecourse boss Brian Carey was not optimistic about Evans' chances of travelling to join John Toshack's squad later today, although the player will have an x-ray before a final decision is made.

“Steve went over on his ankle again and has the same injury he picked up at Newtown in July," said Carey.

"The Hereford player landed on him when he went over on it and so we’ll have to see how he is, but I think it’s very unlikely he will report for duty with the Wales squad."

Evans was one of three Dragons players named in the national squad, along with Mark Jones and Chris Lewellyn for Saturday's Millennium Stadium clash against Germany, which is followed by an away game in Slovakia on Wednesday week.

Youngsters Mike Williams, Neil Taylor and Michael Carvill are also on international duty with the Wales and Northern Ireland under-21 squads respectively.
