THE latest additions to the cast of Chester Gate-way's final Christmas production have been announced. Norfolk Terriers, Charlie and Barney, who are brother and sister from Bangor-on-Dee, Wrexham will be sharing the role of Toto in The Wizard of Oz. Director Richard Williams said: 'Toto is a Cairn Terrier in the film, but we weren't just looking for dogs who met that requirement. 'Any small, cute and preferably dark coloured dog that we felt was well trained, was all we were really looking for to play the role of Toto.' Dogs of all shapes and sizes turned up for Toto auditions in November. After getting the sixteen canines to obey to commands and work with a stranger, director Richard decided these two nine year old dogs would be perfect for the role. They will be taking it in turns to appear at the beginning and at the end of each performance. Owner Sara Wren said: 'I'm very excited for Charlie and Barney. They have taken part in dog displays and competitions. 'In the past Charlie has played the keyboard on live radio and has also been filmed for local television riding a skateboard, so I'm not to worried about them having stage fight.' Misty, seven, a cross terrier from Chester has been chosen as the reserve for the show. Press officer Julia Kouyoumdjian says: 'Misty and owner Sue Stephenson have been a great help taking part in our promotional shots and joined the cast for Chester's Christmas lights switch on.' |
