NORTH Wales Jazz Society's current season of concerts at the Crown Inn, Llay, ends on Tuesday (December 5) with a Christmas jam session, featuring special guest Liam Byrne. This popular young saxophonist, originally from Llandegla, began playing the instrument as a 14-year-old schoolboy. Two years later, he joined the Bill Basey Big Band, from which moment onwards jazz became his first love. Though still only 21, he plays with great assurance and flair, having been influenced by people like Stan Getz, Scott Hamilton and Lee Konitz. At the Crown, he will be joined by the North Wales Jazz Quartet, led by Trefor Owen, along with sitters-in and other guest musicians, to produce a programme featuring a wide variety of music. The music starts at 8.30pm and admission is £5 with £4 concessions. The NWJS is planning an exciting programme for next year, including a varied range of concerts at the Crown, the annual jazz guitar weekend in March and other events during the Wrexham Arts Festival in May. * Further information about all NWJS activities is available on 01745 812260 and on www.northwalesjazz.org.uk |
