Demanding role for popular gospel choir

Dec 15 2006

Chester Chronicle, Llandudno

DEMAND has been so great for tickets to Chester Music Festival's Christmas Celebration at the city's cathedral that the audience area has been extended to allow more to attend.

'The celebration with the London Community Gospel Choir proved so popular we sold out instantly,' said festival administrator Carol Griffiths.

'Then faced with a waiting list a mile long, we have now opened up another area of seating and a new wave of tickets are being snapped up yet again.'

After opening Chester's music festival last year hot from their Live 8 appearance with Madonna, the funky choir, pictured left, has sung on the soundtrack of The Lion King, opened at Glastonbury and put gospel on the map at the BBC Proms.

Apart from planning this Christmas special, the last of the year's new late-season programme, festival organ-isers were also moving office this week, from number eight Abbey Square to number four.

* The London Community Gospel Choir: A Christmas Celebration is at Chester Cathedral tomorrow (Saturday, December 16) at 7.30pm. Tickets, priced £15 and £12, from the box office on 01244 340392.
