THE sensational Bellydance Superstars and The Desert Roses are to follow last year's box-office sell-outs in London with a sparkling performance at the North Wales Theatre, Llandudno, on Monday, May 16. This is part of a massive European tour that culminates with the red-hot US dance troupe performing at the Glastonbury Festival in June, on each of the event's jazz, dance and main stages. Its authentic Arabic music and dance extravaganza has been a total out-ofthe-box success for the troupe and music business legend, Miles Copeland, their manager and founder. Copeland, a music mogul who managed Sting, The Police, The Bangles and was the agent for the Sex Pistols' first tour, is one of the entertainment industry's most colourful characters and feels this new craze will be even bigger than Riverdance. Aged between 21 and 38, many of the dancers are professional teachers of the art. They perform a cross-section of tribal, Egyptian and cabaret styles and plan to take the belly-dancing art into the mainstream. Copeland believes it is much more than just a fantastic way to keep fit, and that it's an art, a dance, and a lifestyle pursuit that also awakens a woman's natural feminine sensuality. "While some would say that belly dance is an art of seduction, others believe that - as the only dance created by women for women - it is a celebration of the woman as a woman. As such, it has become a recognised self-esteem builder, a dance to enjoy and participate in no matter what your age, size, or shape." Critics and the public alike have been captivated by the sheer vitality and simmering sexiness of belly dancing, and belly dance schools, teachers, and workshops can be found in the UK Its popularity is just growing by leaps and bounds. Many credit this rapid upsurge in popularity to the Bellydance Superstars who've taken the world by storm. * Catch the show from 8pm; tickets from £18.50. Contact the box office on 01492 872000. |
