Cruising down Broadway

By Sophie Smith

AS ONE of only two nightclubs in Llandudno, it's not surprising that the Broadway Boulevard occasionally comes in for criticism by local clubbers. Some say it's boring and repetitive, but this really isn't fair - the management have recently made a big effort to introduce a bit of variety.

Every Wednesday, its 70s, 80s and 90s night at the Broadway - dubbed grab-a-granny night by cruel youngsters. It's a hell of a party for the oldies, with the club winding them up to fever pitch with some classic tunes and practically giving drinks away at 50p per shot! Wednesdays also involve private parties, although I've never seen one and I've been to my fair share of Wednesdays!

The boulevard have recently been bringing in big name DJ Euphoria on Thursdays to try and get a few more faces in the building by introducing some more exotic sounds. They also tried to launch foam parties - but I don't think my hometown of Llandudno is ready for this! Nor is it likely to be for some time!

Fridays in the Broadway always seem really quiet, even though you can get entry for just a penny with special tickets (before 10pm of course) which are available in shops around Llandudno.  There is the odd occasion when it gets extremely busy on Fridays - this is when the cameras come to film for the 'UK Ibiza uncovered' TV programme.

On these nights you find people doing anything to be in front of a camera! Fridays are basically dance nights brought to us by DJ Dan Philips who has been blasting us tunes for over four years now - yet he still manages to get the fans screaming with delight (or drunkenness!).

If you are keen to go to the almighty Broadway Boulevard then Saturday is THE night. There is a completely different crowd in the club on Saturday and the music has a bit more variety then just the 'bang bang' kind. The music caters for everyone and all tastes of music. Unfortunately there are NO offers on a Saturday night - no surprise, since it's the best night.

The actual building is very big with a ground floor and a balcony containing five bars and a place to buy food if you get peckish! There are a couple of sofas on the ground floor but the bottom floor is mainly for dancing and for the podium dancers (who in fact are very good). The balcony contains the majority of the seats and also holds the only cocktail bar. If you are looking to socialise and drink, then upstairs is the best place.

If you are going to the Broadway and know you look young for your age then either bring a pictured driving licence or passport - these bouncers are not people you want to mess with, trust me! Oh, and before I forget they have a strict dress code - no trainers, no trackies and only smart clothes.  Enjoy!
