Dogs’ healing sessions going swimmingly

Oct 17 2008

by George Tattum, Flintshire Chronicle

IT’S far from a dog’s life for threeyear-old miniature poodle Tonka.

The pampered pooch belongs to Stuart and Ann Harmes, who began offering canine hydrotherapy three years ago at Camddwr Canine on their smallholding at Llanarmon yn Iâl.

Tonka regularly takes a dip in the indoor heated pool and many other dogs – some old, others injured and some just to get fit – have also taken the plunge.

Former social worker Ann, 43, said: “The owners of show dogs use the pool because it tones muscles and improves movement in the ring.

“Many dogs come to us after surgery, or with skeletal disorders such as hip dysplasia or arthritis.

“Exercise, combined with warm water, increases blood flow to affected areas and encourages healing. Cold water could cause more damage”.
