Doorstep crime on increase

Oct 17 2008

by Francesca Elliott, Flintshire Chronicle

THE number of victims of doorstep crime is on the increase, according to the police.

Doorstep crime can include distraction burglary, bogus workmen, bogus officials, high pressure salespeople or improperly conducted property repairs or garden maintenance.

At a conference, North Wales Police, Trading Standards, Neighbourhood Watch and Flintshire County Council aimed to raise awareness of the problem of doorstep crime and to reduce the impact on the community once the crime has occurred.

Brian Steele, an ex- chief superintendent with West Yorkshire Police, said: “Everybody, but particularly older people living in social isolation, can become victims of doorstep crime.

“Older people often don’t tell about doorstep crime because they may feel foolish or ashamed they have been conned.

“One of the biggest barriers is fear of the family saying they are no longer capable of living alone.”

In the UK, offenders mostly gain entry by claiming to be from the water board, electricity, gas or council.

People are advised not to pay with cash at the door and to say no to uninvited salespeople.

“The message is clear,” said Mr Steele. “If you have any suspicions about any caller at your door – report it.”
