FLINTSHIRE Trading Standards is warning the public to be wary of travelling salesmen trying to sell leather jackets from the boot of their car. Earlier this week a consumer in Buckley was approached by a man in a silver Mercedes who asked if he wanted to buy a cheap leather jacket. He claimed he was a travelling salesman from Italy and had a number of jackets he could not sell and could not take them back to Italy for customs reasons. The salesman finally convinced the consumer to take him to the bank where he persuaded him to hand over £485 cash. The consumer was left with a bag of poor quality clothes worth nowhere near the amount he handed over. The county council’s head of public protection Dr Paul McGreary said: “This is clearly an attempt to mislead people into thinking they are purchasing a high quality product when it is anything but. “Consumers always need to be wary when they are approached in the street by people claiming to sell high quality goods. When it sounds too good to be true it always is. “If anyone is approached in this way to buy any goods I would always advise that they should refuse. “If they are able to they should also make a note of any registration numbers and report the incident to the police and Trading Standards.” |
