ONLY the horrendous British summer can save Pontblyddyn’s title bid. That’s the verdict of skipper Julian Morris after his fourth-placed team had to settle for a losing draw with fifth-placed Brymbo on Saturday. The 10-9 points share in the Wrexham side’s favour leaves Pont 39 points behind leaders Llandudno before tomorrow’s home clash with second-placed Mochdre. Morris, who will also have half an eye on proceedings between Tudno and third-placed Menai Bridge, said: “I don’t think we’ve got a chance but if we can beat Mochdre and the Llandudno game is rained off then you never know. “Saturday was a disappointing result, but it was games we should have won earlier in the season that has cost us.” Pont, who welcome back Phil Snell, Richard Davies and possibly Phil Davies tomorrow, would have lost to Brymbo had it not been for yet another stunning knock from Glenn Chambers. With a masterly 98, he took his run tally for the term past the 700-mark and, with wicketkeeper Tim McCarthy (44), hoisted the visitors up to 211-9, having been 97-6 in reply to 241-6. Morris, who battled through the pain barrier to take 4-52, said: “Glenn is an awesome batsman and if he hadn’t have been dismissed late on we would have won the game.” Connah’s Quay’s slim championship hopes were ended on the same afternoon as they went down to a 24-6 points loss to Llandudno. Missed catches cost the sixth-placed Quay dear as the two-time defending champions put on 229-9, with Darren Leach (3-53) the pick of the bowlers, before halting their hosts on 167 after captain Martin Burger (58) and the impressive Sean Steynberg-Wright (32) were snaffled. Burger, who has Dave Powell and Gavin Parry back for tomorrow’s trip to Bangor, said: “I would be pleased by finishing sixth considering the amount of players we’ve had missing this season. “But I will not allow us to sit back and relax because if we win our final two games we could yet finish in the top three, which would be a fantastic achievement.” |
