Cymru Alliance – Mold in high spirits for derby cup clash

Oct 3 2008

by Paul Wheelock, Flintshire Chronicle

MOLD Alexandra go into tomorrow’s all-Flintshire Welsh Cup second-round tie at Flint Town United (2.30pm) buzzing after their best performance of the season.

Saturday’s 6-2 success at Guilsfield extended their unbeaten run on the road to four and was in spite of the fact they played most of the match with 10 men.

Mold broke the deadlock in the 37th minute through Sam Roberts, only for Owain Roberts to get himself sent off for swearing four minutes later, with his woe being compounded when the hosts equalised five minutes after the break.

But, after Danny Seamarks’ side regained the advantage through Dave Pitson’s header, they never looked back.

Chris Guy netted from 20 yards, Pitson coolly slotted in his second before a delightful chip from the league’s player of the month, Stuart Hayes, made it five.

Shell-shocked Guilsfield pulled a goal back, but Mold had the last word through debutant Sam Davidson.

Boss Seamarks, who will be without Darren Pritchard, Colin Davies and the suspended Roberts tomorrow, said: “I’ve felt that performance has been coming but I never thought we’d end up winning 6-2 after going down to 10 men.

“We’re really looking forward to Flint but we know it’s going to be a very difficult test.”

Flint, thanks to Robbie Chesters’ first goal for the club, made it six games without defeat on Saturday with a 1-0 home win over Denbigh.

But the shine was taken off the result when goalkeeper Adam McGhee was stretchered off with a broken kneecap.

Flint boss Paul Davies, who will hand the gloves to Andy Hughes, said: “It’s a massive blow for us as I think Adam is the best keeper in the league. Luckily Andy is also a top keeper and he won’t let us down.

“Mold is going to be a very tough game. They are very good going forwards, like we are, so it should be open.”

Buckley Town are in Welsh Cup second-round combat at Brickfield tomorrow (2.30pm) and they will make the trip to the Welsh National League Premier Division outfit in confident mood after Saturday’s 2-1 triumph over Ruthin, for whom it was their first away loss of the campaign.

Simon Sedgwick’s side could easily have scored more than the two they did through Mitchell Booth, with a piledriver, and Miles Todd, with a well-taken volley.

Boss Sedgwick, who adds Sean Jones and Chris Knowles to his squad tomorrow, said: “We absolutely battered them and their keeper was by far the man of the match.

“We’ll make sure the lads are focused for Saturday, though. I’ve never been past the secondround stage as a manager so that’s something I’d like to put right.”

Mynydd Isa went down 1-0 on Saturday at new leaders and their Welsh Cup conquerors Holyhead.

Gareth Thomas’ eighth-placed Isa came close to equalising through Stuart Wood, Dean Hardstaff and Sam Pugh.

Boss Thomas is without Pugh, Ben McKean, Chris Brooks and Neil Wynne for tomorrow’s clash at fourth- placed Ruthin (2.30pm). Danny Farrell, Tom Price, Darren Horne and Ian Pierce come in.
