HALKYN United gave NEWI Cefn Druids the fright of their lives before bowing out of the Welsh Cup with their heads held high on Saturday. Captain Wayne Edwards, from the edge of the box and after he beat the offside trap to hammer in off the bar, twice put the Welsh Alliance visitors in front at Plaskynaston Lane. But the Welsh Premier League strugglers, thanks to hat-trick hero Mike Heverin and Joe Feeney, fought back to take it 4-2. Castell Alun Colts’ adventure also ended at the second-round stage as they were thrashed 8-0 at top-flight high flyers Rhyl, who fielded a full-strength side featuring former Wrexham stars like Danny Williams and Josh Johnson. One-time Airbus UK Broughton winger Craig Jones opened the scoring for the big-spending Lilywhites, who would have racked up double figures had it not been for a heroic goalkeeping performance by Rob Williams, who made six stunning saves. Teenage hitman Mike Pritchard came closest for the Welsh National League Premier Division outfit when he was denied by Lee Kendall. Rhydymwyn were just 15 minutes away from causing a shock at Gresford. But the Cymru Alliance hosts, trailing to Marc Gunther’s opener, equalised in the 75th minute before running out 4-1 winners after extra-time. Holywell Town battled bravely before going down 3-0 at home to unstoppable Bethesda in the Welsh Alliance. Hawarden Rangers maintained their unbeaten start to the Welsh National League Premier Division with a 4-2 home victory over basement boys Borras Park. Gary McConnell, Tim McGarvey, Steve Owen and Mike Adamson shared the strikes for fifth-placed Hawarden. Penyffordd hauled themselves up to fourth in Division One with a 4-1 home romp over Holt Nomads. Sam Richardson (2), Danny Stennett and Phil Simon did the damage for Peny. Hawarden Rangers became the latest team to fall victim to Reserves Division pacesetters Rhos Aelwyd as they suffered a 3-0 away reverse. Mynydd Isa, despite Dwayne Riley and Luke Reece efforts, were beaten 3-2 at home by Penycae. The previous evening Airbus UK Broughton won their derby 3-1 at Mold Alexandra, who led through Terry Pughe’s penalty, while Buckley Town lost by the same score at home to Gresford. Penyffordd slipped to third in the Reserves & Colts Division on Saturday after an injury-time leveller meant they had to settle for a 3-3 draw at Coedpoeth. Ryan Ankers, Chris Lavery and Jim Barnes had put Peny ahead. |
