Welsh Cup –Trotters to meet Wingmakers in last 32

08:38, Oct 6 2008

by Paul Wheelock, Flintshire Chronicle

BUCKLEY Town’s reward for avoiding a potential banana skin is a third-round home tie with Welsh Premier League neighbours Airbus UK Broughton.

The Trotters were 4-3 winners at 10-man Brickfield Rangers on Saturday thanks to top-scorer Mark Roberts, Mitchell Booth and Joe Garner (2), whose second strike settled the thriller five minutes from time.

The Welsh National League Premier Division outfit gave their Cymru Alliance visitors a mighty scare, however, and it might have been different had they not had goalkeeper Andy Ruscoe sent off in the 47th minute following a skirmish.

Flint Town United are the third and final Flintshire side through to the last 32 after they won their second-round derby at home to 10-man Mold Alexandra 4-0.

The Silkmen’s hero was teenager Jack Abrahams, who hit a hat-trick. His first came after the away side failed to clear, his second from the penalty spot after Craig Roberts was dismissed for a handball on the line and his third with a piledriver.

And there was further woe for Mold when Shaun Beck fired in off the head of Gavin Williams.

Flint will now make the long trip south to face either Welsh League Division Two’s Llanwern or Welsh League’s Division Three’s Llwydcoed, whose second-round clash takes place on Wednesday.

Halkyn United did themselves and the Welsh Alliance proud in going down 4-2 at Welsh Premier League strugglers NEWI Cefn Druids.

Captain Wayne Edwards twice put Halkyn in front, with a shot from just outside of the box in the eighth minute and in the 40th minute when he sprung the offside trap and hammered in off the bar.

Castell Alun Colts, also up against top-flight opposition, fared worse than their Flintshire neighbours as they were thrashed 8-0 at a full-strength Rhyl team featuring former Wrexham stars like Danny Williams and Josh Johnson.

Ex-Airbus UK Broughton winger Craig Jones opened the scoring for the Lilywhites, who would have chalked up double figures had it not been for a heroic performance by goalkeeper Rob Williams.

Youngster Mike Pritchard came closest for the Colts.

Rhydymwyn’s adventure came to an end at the Cymru Alliance’s Gresford Athletic, who came from behind to run out 4-1 winners after extra-time.

Marc Gunther had put battling Rhyd in front.

Mynydd Isa moved up to fifth in the Cymru Alliance with a fine 3-2 victory at fourth-placed Ruthin.

Joe Desormeaux, Paul Connolly and Dean Hardstaff did the damage for Isa.
