Caersws 0 Gap Connah’s Quay 1

09:55, Sep 29 2008

by Paul Wheelock, Flintshire Chronicle

TEN-MAN Nomads moved up to fifth on Saturday after they inflicted a first home defeat of the season on Dave Taylor’s men.

Steve O’Shaughnessy’s side, hurting after back-to-back Welsh Premier League defeats, seemed set for a tough second half when midfielder Danny Forde was sent off two minutes before the break after collecting his second yellow card from whistle-happy referee Simon Jones.

But they dug in and ran out worthy winners thanks to centre-back Andy Alston’s 67th-minute strike.

And had it not been for Andy Hughes – one of five former Nomads players in the home ranks – the scoreline would have been more emphatic, with the excellent goalkeeper making two blinding double saves from Craig Davies and Tommy Mutton.

Caersws, managed by former Buckley Town boss Taylor, could find no way past a resolute backline in which right-back Peter Doran stood out, meaning keeper Chris Maxwell enjoyed a relatively comfortable afternoon before jetting off with the Wales Under 19s squad for their friendly in Montenegro tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Nomads’ home game with Rhyl on Friday, October 10 has been switched to the Lilywhites’ Belle Vue home so not to avoid clashing with a major charity function being held at Deeside College on the same night.
