Carmarthen Town 2 Gap Connah’s Quay 0

NOMADS could not make it back-to-back victories in South Wales as they deservedly went down to the unbeaten Old Gold on Saturday.

Buzzing after their win at Port Talbot six days earlier took them up to third in the Welsh Premier League, Steve O’Shaughnessy’s side were brought back down to an earth with a bump by Danny Thomas and Nathan Cotterrall.

It might have been different had they turned their early dominance into goals, however.

Stand-in skipper Liam Loughlin played in Tommy Mutton, who burst through the middle only to be denied by a fine save from Neil Thomas.

The goalkeeper then did well to keep out a vicious volley from Peter Doran, who nearly put a finishing touch to some neat approach play by Mutton and Loughlin.

But slowly but surely Carmarthen came into the game and they broke the deadlock a minute before half-time when Danny Thomas converted a Sasha Walters cross.

With Mutton and Loughlin being kept quiet up front and Nicky Palmer and Paul Fowler bossing midfield, the hosts took control after the break and killed the contest 15 minutes from time when the dangerous Cotterrall beat Chris Maxwell to the ball to slot home.

Maxwell, the impressive young custodian on loan from Wrexham, felt he had been fouled, but the goal was allowed to stand as Carmarthen moved above fifth-placed Nomads into fourth.

Carmarthen: N Thomas, Hughes, Smothers, Palmer, Hancock, Dodds, D Thomas (Brace 90), Hicks (Hudgell 62), Fowler, Walters (Roberts 74), Cotterrall.

Goals: D Thomas 44, Cotterrall 75.

Nomads: Maxwell, Clarke, Bamber, B Alston, A Alston, Peter Doran (Davies 62), Forde (Garside 79), Quinn, Mutton, Loughlin, Phil Doran (McNutt 74). Sub: Pinch.

Booked: Maxwell, Quinn.

Attendance: 279.

ON FRIDAY – See The Flintshire Chronicle for a preview of Nev Powell’s return to the Deeside Stadium with Bangor.
