NOMADS gave themselves an outside chance of qualifying for the Loosemores Challenge Cup quarter-finals last night by winning their final Group Six game. Second-half strikes from Andy Alston and Tommy Mutton ensures Steve O’Shaughnessy’s side finish second behind The New Saints. As things stand, their record of two victories and two defeats will be enough to see them through to the knock-out stage as one of the two best runners-up. However, their place in the last eight will only be confirmed if a series of other results go their way in this coming Tuesday’s last round of group clashes. All three goals came in the space of seven minutes, with Alston opening the scoring in the 57th. The centre-back, who settled the meeting of the sides at Bastion Road last month, drilled home his third of the season following good work from the excellent Craig Jones and Aden Shannon. Striker Mutton, following build up play by Jones and Craig Garside, also took his tally for the campaign up to three two minutes later when he turned his marker and hammered in. Weakened Prestatyn, who finish bottom of the three-team group, reduced the deficit five minutes after that, though, as Steve Bowes capitalised on Peter Doran’s error to beat Chris Maxwell, who went on to make two fine saves.
