O’Shaughnessy out for revenge in cup

Oct 3 2008

by Paul Wheelock, Flintshire Chronicle

GAP Connah’s Quay will be a team on a mission tomorrow when they head to holders Bangor for the tie of the Welsh Cup second round (2pm).

The one blemish on Nomads’ highly encouraging start to the season came two weeks ago when they went down 3-1 at home to Nev Powell’s Citizens.

And that, according to boss Steve O’Shaughnessy, is a score they are determined to settle at Farrar Road.

O’Shaughnessy said: “They beat us at home in the league quite convincingly, although I thought we helped them by being so poor that night. So we’ve definitely got a point to prove and the best way to do that would be by getting a result and getting through to the next round.

“It’s going to be a tough game as they’re the holders, but we’ll be going there confident.”

O’Shaughnessy will be able to add two notable names to the squad that won 1-0 at Caersws on Saturday.

Captain Gary Pinch, following a month on the sidelines with a knee injury, returns along with striker Adam Dickinson who, having proved his fitness in the reserves, is in line for his first start for the first team in more than a year following a serious knee problem.

Andy Alston, who has taken Pinch’s place in the heart of defence, sent Caersws crashing to their first home defeat of the campaign, but had it not been for former Nomads number one Andy Hughes the final scoreline would have been more emphatic.

O’Shaughnessy, whose side moved up to fifth as a result of ending their two-match losing run, said: “We were a due a win after a few results went against us and the lads delivered.”

The victory was achieved in spite of the fact midfielder Danny Forde was sent off two minutes before the break for a second yellow card.

He is banned tomorrow while Mike Cronshaw remains sidelined with a knee complaint.

On-loan Wrexham goalkeeper Chris Maxwell is available having kept a clean sheet for Wales Under 19s in their friendly in Montenegro on Tuesday.

Last season’s players’ player of the year Tommy Baker has left for Runcorn Linnets in a view to returning in January, while Sam McNutt is unlikely to be involved in the immediate future having decided to commit more time to his work with Bolton’s Football in the Community programme.

Nomads welcome Prestatyn to the Deeside Stadium on Tuesday for a Loosemores Challenge Cup Group Six clash they must win to qualify for the quarter-finals (7.30pm).
