NOMADS’ mightily impressive start to the season continued yesterday as they cruised to victory in South Wales to move up to third in the Welsh Premier League.
The win, secured by Tommy Mutton and stand-in skipper Liam Loughlin, was the perfect response to their first defeat of the campaign eight days earlier.
And it was no less than they deserved as they outplayed a Steelmen side who lost just twice at the GenQuip Stadium on their way to a fourth-placed finish last time out.
Nomads, who boast a superb record at Port Talbot, broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when former Swansea City striker Tommy Mutton turned inside his marker and brilliantly fired past one-time Wrexham goalkeeper Kristian Rogers.
And the points were sealed four minutes before the break when Loughlin, so impressive since his arrival from Runcorn Linnets and wearing the captain’s armband in the absence of the injured Gary Pinch, punished the hosts for some slack defending.
The visitors, driven on by midfield dynamo Danny Forde, could and should have extended their lead after the restart, with Mutton and Peter Doran wasting chances to put a truer reflection on the final scoreline.
Nomads chief executive Stewart Roberts said: “It was a superb performance and we could easily have scored three or four. We are all very pleased.”
