CONNAH’S Quay aces Darren Frost and Richard O’Connor reeled in monster catches in Saturday’s open match on the New Pool at Weston Pools fishery. Frost took the win with a whopping 109lb 5oz while O’Connor was third with an excellent 97lb 12oz. Two more Quay anglers were in fine form in the second round of the North Wales Winter League at Hampton Springs fishery on Sunday. Dave Weale topped the 60-strong field with 71lb 4oz of carp taken to pellet from peg 24 of Long Island, while Andy Amos was second with 66lb 12oz of carp from peg 18 on the same pool. Their superb showings helped Ellesmere Port’s Rod ‘n Reel to third place. Saints and Chester Tackle Locker share top spot in the table, followed by Rod and Connah’s Quay Match in fourth. A week of matches at the Leeswood fishery began with victory for Holywell’s Les Pickin on the Tuesday. Drawn on peg 34 on Tranquillity, he bagged 23lb 9oz of small carp using corn and pellet to overcome Mold’s Mark Boulton with 19lb 11oz from peg four and Simon Nibbs with 16lb 14oz. The low weights were attributed to clear water. Bailiff Ben Toplass took the honours two days later. The Flint star, fishing murky water, netted 63lb 8oz of small carp using corn from peg 35 to sweep aside Wirral youngster Anthony Moran with carp worth 21lb 12oz on corn and pellet from peg five. Christleton’s Dave Furling won on Sunday. With a good number of fish, he caught 22lb 14oz of skimmers taken to maggot from peg eight, with Barry Davies second with 18lb 9oz of carp using pellet and corn from peg 35. Wrexham’s Neil Jones was third in the Thursday Rovers match at Hampton Springs, luring 48lb 10oz of mainly chub using corn from peg three from Meadow Pool. |
