Golf – Holywell do it for Tony

Oct 17 2008

by Paul Wheelock, Flintshire Chronicle

THERE was a thrilling but poignant finish to this year’s Flintshire Handicap League.

Although Holywell lost to Flint, the half point won by Jamie Jelleyman and Mark Musgrave was decisive as it meant they edged out Hawarden to take the title.

Holywell’s victory, how- ever, was tinged with sadness given the sudden loss of team organiser Tony Jelleyman.

The triumphant team dedicated their success to a man who will be missed by his many friends at the club and, in a fitting tribute, Tony’s son Jamie was asked to join Holywell’s vice-captain Mark Chacksfield in collecting the league trophy.

Garry Houston is staring a European Tour exit in the face.

The 37-year-old from Flint Mountain, after four seasons competing alongside the continent’s greatest golfers, remains 122nd in the Order of Merit with 178,297 euros after he missed the cut at last weekend’s Madrid Masters.

Doug Ellis (41) was the convincing winner of Flint’s Jack Heyden Putter from Owen O’Neil MBE (37) and Ian Farrimond (35).

Ladies’ president Jen Rowlands and Mary Lewis were the toast of Old Padeswood’s Ladies October Medal and LGU Pendant on Sunday.

Rowlands (77-9=68) won the Silver Division from Therese Gooding (81-7=74) and Julie Slater (97-20=77) while the Bronze Division went the way of Lewis (98-23=75) from Rosie Gayle (110-29=81) and Freda Williams (115-34=81).

Jane Howard (102-26=76) edged out first silver Melanie Peters (85-9=76) to win Hawarden’s LGU Pendant, with Jean Hughes (117-31=86) first bronze, while Ellen Murray (33) won the Ladies Three Clubs & Putter from first silver Linda Reidford (30) and first bronze Marie Blair (27).

Division One of the Calcutta Cup went the way of Clifford Cooper, Alex Roberts, Paul Dolman and Jay Pearson (87) from Bill Jones, Michael Rowlands, Peter Doonan and Ken Edgar (85) and Andy Meldrum, Antony Price, Doug Easton and David Greenland (81).
