Netball – Demons made to fight for victory

Oct 10 2008

by Paul Wheelock, Flintshire Chronicle

DEESIDE Demons made the perfect start to the defence of their North East Wales League Division One crown by beating Marks & Spencer 46-30.

But they were made to fight all the way by their newly-promoted opponents and only put the game beyond their reach after they brought on Wales internationals Bev Lovatt and Jenna Cawthorne.

Toni Mountford starred for Deeside, debutant Ann Burt Williams for M & S.

Relegated Mold Ravens got their Division Two campaign up and running by hammering Sharp Harlequins 66-14.

Bethany Barker was in sparkling form for Mold.

Mold Sports, who just missed out on promotion last time out, suffered a setback in their opening contest as they went down 43-32 to Divas.

New goal defence Emma Vessey caught the eye for Divas, goalkeeper Nia Griffiths for Mold.

Holywell Hawks swept aside fellow young guns Deeside Darts 42-17 in their Division Three opener.

Wing attack Amie Preece made a senior league debut to remember for Deeside, but they were no match after the break for Holywell, for whom Steph Peterson excelled.

Diva Dragons were 41-19 winners over Wrexham Seniors.

Tracy Pritchard was outstanding for relegated Diva, with Becky Roberts the pick for promoted Wrexham.

Flint Foxes and Dragons shared a 17-17 split to kick Division Four off in style.

Louise Barber was superb at the heart of the Dragons defence, with Hazel Strapp just as impressive for relegated Flint.

Rhosnesni Robins edged their derby with Wrexham Jets 24-22.

Centre Deb Williams ran the game for Rhosnesni, with goalkeeper Helena Dunnings doing all she could for Wrexham.
