Rugby union – Mold bounce back before big clash
Rugby union – Mold bounce back before big clash

MOLD banished their Colwyn Bay demons on Saturday to put their North Wales League Division One title charge firmly back on track.

A 12-3 victory at a ground where they have lost for the past two seasons ended the Chester Road outfit’s two- game losing run and lifted team spirits for tomorrow’s match of the day at home to unbeaten second-placed defending champions Caernarfon (2.30pm).

Mold player-head coach David Hogg said: “Caernarfon will be a very tough test because they are going very well, but we feel our win at Colwyn Bay has put us back on track.

“We’re still treating it as a must-win game, though. Caer- narfon have got a big and strong pack so if we can achieve parity there and defend like we did on Saturday, then I am sure we’ve got the players in our backs to get at them.”

Mold’s defence were the stars of the hard-fought success over a Bay side that were desperate to continue their home hex over their old foes in a bid to kick-start their season.

But Hogg’s men, for whom Mike Roberts was outstanding at stand-in tighthead prop, were a different animal to the one that had gone down at home to leaders Nant Conwy.

They should have sealed the points in an impressive opening salvo, but instead they had to rely on the trusty boot of Dan Edmunds to kick four penalties to see them to a much-needed win.

Hogg, now fully recovered from a serious knee injury, said: “I was very pleased with the performance.

“We should have finished the game off in the first 20 minutes but we just couldn’t get over the try line.

“I was a bit disappointed with that, but the attitude of all of the players was absolutely spot on, especially the defence. They fronted up, took their responsibility and were completely unrecognisable to the week before.”

Hogg, through work commitments, is out tomorrow but Gavin Taylor and Aaron Jones should return. Jamie Griffiths, Richie Cochrane and Simon Howells remain sidelined.

Mold 2nds, having seen their Division Three home clash with Pwllheli 2nds cancelled by the visitors, lost a friendly at home to Old Anselmians 17-10 on Saturday.

Leading through Dan Bowden and Kenny Williams, Mold paid the price for not putting the game to bed when they had the Wirral team on the rack.

Flint were in Division Three action, however, going down 18-7 at home to Nant Conwy 2nds despite captain Dustin Parry converting his own try.
