Caernarfon Town 1, Aberystwyth Town 3

Sep 25 2006

By Keith Evans, Daily Post

CAERNARFON, who hope to name their new manager this week, suffered their fourth straight defeat after Aberystwyth had rushed two goals in a minute in the first half.

The Canaries were punished by Andy Evans and Stuart Roberts scoring after 27 and 28 minutes - and the arrears could have been a lot more substantial before the break.

But aline-up reshuffle for the second period worked a treat, with Craig Roberts and Chris Jones drafted off the bench, in place of caretaker-bosses Lee Jones and Kenny Irons.

Caernarfon showed more purpose and, when Roberts reduced the arrears on the hour, the fight-back was on in earnest, only for other chances to go begging.

It was Aberystwyth's third goal near the end that provided the scoreline with aconvincing look.

The Canaries' Lee Jones said: "We were not in the game by a long chalk in the first half but then changed our system to 4-4-2 for the second half, and were back in contention.

"When the score was 2-1, we had three or four situations to draw level and then late on, when they picked up their third goal, it did not really matter.

"Aberystwyth had penned us in a lot in the first half but we dug deep and certainly did not collapse, as we had done the previous week at Port Talbot in that 7-1 defeat."

Caernarfon almost scored minutes into the action, when Steve Watkin hooked a glorious 20-yarder on to the bar by way of keeper Richard Morgan's fingertips.

But the rest belonged to the visitors, whose sustained pressure featured a series of threats, culminating in Evans heading home from Sion James' right-wing cross.

When totally dominant Aberystwyth went two goals up, Roberts latching on to Luke Sherbon's through-ball to fire home from 12 yards, arout looked likely.

But Caernarfon, who could have been six or seven down at half time, managed to limit the damage and, when on the hour Craig Roberts chipped the keeper from the edge of the box, the

game opened up again.

The points were Aberystwyth-bound only when Sherbon drilled the visitors' third goal in of the underside of the bar two minutes from the whistle.
