Haverfordwest County 1, Porthmadog 1

Sep 25 2006

Daily Post, Llandudno

PORTHMADOG are still looking for their first win over Haverfordwest in seven games since rejoining the Welsh Premier but, even so, were satisfied with this away point.

Carl Owen's goal on 66 minutes achieved the draw, the striker using his head from six yards to convert at the far post a cross by Les Davies from the right wing.

County, whose lively Lee Hudgell was the game's star performer, had gone ahead on 12 minutes, through Chris Miller converting his team-mate's right-wing centre.

Porthmadog had opened with a flourish and would have been rewarded several times over but for Lee Kendall's acrobatics in the home goal, which frustrated Owen and Davies in particular.

His counterpart Richard Harvey was called into action as well, to deny Miller a second goal similar to his opener, and the keeper had to go down at a

post to grab a Hudgell cross-shot.

During the away team's better moments, Danny Hughes had an angled drive from the right diverted around a post by Kendall and Davies aimed a 20-yarder, which the keeper also dealt with effectively.

A Porthmadog corner by Chris Evans caused confusion in the home defence around the hour mark and centre-back Rhys Roberts reacted first to put in a snap shot that flew over the top.

Haverfordwest stepped up the tempo towards the end, seeking the decider, and Davies rescued the visitors with a goal-line clearance that denied Wayne Jones.

Porthmadog also nearly sneaked it through sub Gareth Caughter on 87 minutes, when he cut inside from the left flank on a 25-yard run and powered a strong effort which Kendall dealt with well.
