The New Saints 4, Cwmbran Town 0

Sep 25 2006

Daily Post, Llandudno

THE New Saints tightened their grip at the top of the Welsh Premier after sweeping aside Cwmbran in convincing fashion at Treflan.

Manager Ken McKenna believed his side could have emerged with a more emphatic scoreline following a dominant display.

"We controlled the game from start to finish and had we been a bit more clinical, we could have scored a few more," he said.

After Ward had put an early effort wide, the hosts went ahead on the half hour when Scott Ruscoe released Greg Stones with a superb pass on the left and the midfielder squared for Nicky Ward to convert from six yards.

A second arrived four minutes later when Tommy Holmes found Toner, who breezed through before dispatching a volley over keeper Gareth Wesson from just inside the box.

Both Toner and Ward wasted a number of other good openings in front of goal, while Wesson weighed in with a

couple of fine saves to limit the scoreline.

The Saints stretched their lead on 57 minutes when Ward's corner was played short to Ruscoe who crossed into the box, and Jackson planted an excellent header into the net.

Ward sealed the win with a fine individual goal 16 minutes from time after weaving past a couple of defenders.

THE NEW SAINTS: Doherty, Baker, Naylor, Jackson, Holmes, Stones, Leah, Hogan (Courtney 61), Ruscoe (Beck 78), Toner (Wilde 73), Ward. CWMBRAN: Wesson, Green (Williams 61), Wysome, Clare, Collins, Pattimore (Hanbury 20), Leek, Raven, J Jenkins, Dawe (Parkins 70), Toppar.
