Conwy hoping for big crowd at Blackburn Rovers game

Oct 5 2006

Weekly News, Llandudno

CONWY UNITED need a big crowd at the Morfa next Tuesday when they play a Blackburn Rovers XI (7.30pm).

Former Welsh international Glyn Hodges, who is Blackburn's reserve team coach, will be in charge of the squad, and as Premiership clubs are without a game for two weeks due to the internationals, cash-strapped Conwy are hoping he will be able to include some first team fringe players.

The game will raise money for Ty Gobaith children's hospice at Tal-y-Cafn as well as for club funds.

A signed Blackburn shirt and pair of goalkeeper Brad Friedel's goalkeeping gloves will be raffled during the game and there will be a penalty shoot-out for junior players at half-time. "We really need the public to come

and support the game and it should be a good night," said Conwy manager Danny McGoona.

He was delighted with Conwy's team's performance in last Saturday's 2-0 Welsh Cup defeat at Penrhyncoch. "We must have had 80 per cent of the game, but failed to put away our chances and got punished for two defensive errors," he reported.

Conwy were denied what seemed a clear penalty for handball, while Paul CassidyandAdamJoneswerebothfoiled by good saves from the home keeper.

Cassidy had an outstanding game, along with Ryan Watson, but got a second yellow card 10 minutes from the end to cap a frustrating day for the Musselmen - compounded by Penrhyncoch getting a plum home draw

against Llanelli in the next round!

nLLANRWST UNITED also did well as they made Welsh Premier leaders The New Saints work hard for a 3-1 win in their Welsh Cup tie.

They enjoyed plenty of possession and a great strike by Adam Hyde put them level at 1-1 at half-time after Michael Wilde had put TNS in front.

Jamie Turner had an effort cleared off the line, before the full-timers secured victory with second half goals from Nicky Ward and John Toner.

Llanrwst skipper Leighton Griffiths said: "Their superior fitness told in the end, but I thought we played well. "It is important now that we take that level of performance into our league games because that is our priority this season."
