Silkmen looking up as opportunity knocks

Feb 9 2007

The Flintshire Chronicle, Llandudno

PACESETTERS Flint Town United have the chance to open up a commanding lead in the next five days.

They travel to sixth-placed Llangefni tomorrow before welcoming troubled Queens Park to Cae Y Castell on Tuesday.

Back-to-back victories would move the Silk-men eight points clear as second-placed Bala and third-placed Buckley Town are out of league action.

Dai Beck, who co-manages Flint along with Paul Davies, is confident his men will do just that.

They made it six wins on the spin on Tuesday with a 2-0 home success over Llandyrnog that took them back to the top.

Shaun Beck put them in front before the excellent Mike Allsopp sealed the points.

Buckley, meanwhile, played their way back into title contention with a superb 2-0 win at previous leaders Bala on Saturday.

Trotters chief Dave Taylor rung the changes for the trip to Maes Tegid, and it paid dividends.

Rene Pinard gave them a 20th-minute lead and the same player settled the contest seven minutes from time.

Taylor said: 'After we scored the first it was backs against the wall stuff but we defended very well, before hitting them on the break for our second. It was a very good performance.

'I gave some players their chance and they took it by getting us a very good result.

'It proved we can do well against the top teams, so now we have to make sure we beat the bottom teams too.'

Taylor's men take their defence of the NEWFA Challenge Cup to Welsh National League Premier Division leaders Brymbo tomorrow, for a quarter-final tie. Richie Dermott and John Farrell come back into the squad.

Mynydd Isa are also in last-eight NEWFA Challenge Cup combat tomorrow, away to another Welsh National League Premier Division outfit, Chirk.

Isa boss Gareth Thomas can call on top scorer Dean Hardstaff, John Leonard, Chris Brooks, Stuart Wood and Paul Murphy.

The quintet missed the 2-2 draw at Ruthin on Saturday that left Isa eighth in the standings.

Thomas's team earned a share of the spoils late on when Neil Wynne finished off good work by Matty Roberts. Sam Pugh got their earlier goal. ..SUPL:
