LLANYSTUMDWY have got their hands on the coveted North Wales Coast Junior Cup, having won the region's top village award in a dramatic penalty shoot-out at Bontnewydd's expense. Rated as second favourites for the showdown at Porthmadog - because of the rivals' ratings in the Safeflue Caernarfon and District League - the hopefuls from Dwyfor Park held their nerve to achieve a 4-2 outcome from the penalty spot. Among Llanystumdwy's match heroes were Owain Roberts, who executed the crucial conversion, and goalkeeper Dylan Parry, who had made a vital block a little earlier. In open play, Bontnewydd had seemingly set the pattern, taking the lead twice, only to be frustrated ultimately by Llanystumdwy's equalising goal deep into stoppage time. A penalty by Ian Pleming on 16 minutes had steered Bontnewydd in front but then Llanystumdwy's Sion Pierce finished off from close range to profit from a 27th minute free-kick from the left wing. The score became 2-1 for Bontnewydd just past the half-hour, when a corner on the left was nodded down towards central defender Prysor Aled, who toe-poked their second goal. Llanystumdwy were running out of time and hope, when they imposed a frantic scramble in their opponents' goalmouth, as match referee Raymond Cotgrove from Pwllheli was checking his stop-watch. That was when left-back Llewelyn Evans scored off a post to force extra-time, during which neither side added to the score. Ultimately, it was Llanystumdwy's day and the South Gwynedd team went on prove that in the shoot-out. |
