IRELAND is the cheapest place in Europe for a motoring holiday while Norway is the most expensive, according to new figures. The Emerald Isle, where petrol costs just 51p a litre, has replaced Spain as offering motorists best value, statistics from American Express Foreign Exchange showed. Despite recent rises in petrol prices, the UK, at an average of 76p a litre, is not the most expensive country in the survey. The dearest petrol is to be found in Holland (78p a litre) and Norway (82p). In the eight euro zone countries surveyed, four registered hefty increases in petrol costs, with Spain up by 15p a litre compared with the same time last year. But the other four euro-currency countries recorded petrol price falls - with petrol in France dipping by 7p a litre. Despite experiencing a petrol price rise, Spain is still the best-value car hire country, with one-week hire plus 1,000 miles costing £254. |
