Dictionary nails the environment

Aug 5 2002

Tomos Livingstone, The Western Mail

A WELSH dictionary of environmental terms will be launched at the National Eisteddfod this morning.

The dictionary is the product of a project of a partnership between the Environment Agency and the University of Wales, Bangor.

They have standardised existing lists of terms drawn from several sources.

The dictionary will be unveiled by National Assembly Presiding Officer Lord Elis-Thomas at the University's site at 11am this morning.

Dr Helen Phillips, director of the Environment Agency Wales - who is learning Welsh - said the dictionary was an important part of their drive to raise the Agency's profile amongst Welsh speakers.

She said, "We believe the new dictionary will be another important contribution to promoting the use of the Welsh language in the field of science and technology as well as the environment."

Elfed Roberts, director of the National Eisteddfod, said, "The agency's support for the science and technology activities of the Eisteddfod allows us to develop further this important aspect of the festival."
