Public urged to vote for areas' favourite flowers

Apr 15 2002

Catrin Williams, The Western Mail

FLOWERS and plants that deck the Welsh countryside could become new county and city symbols adorning car number plates and even stamps.

Just as California celebrates the poppy, Cardiff may soon be emblazoned with goldilocks aster, dune gentian or fen orchid, and Ceredigion with mountain pansy.

Letters from Anglesey may boast stamps showing the spotted rock rose and post from Brecknockshire the meadow thistle.

This floral bouquet is the concept of conservation charity Plantlife to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

With the support of its patron, the Prince of Wales, it is aiming to create a botanic map of the UK by encour-aging people to vote for their favourite flower by the end of the year.

Ministers are being lobbied to agree to the symbols being used on vehicle registration plates, stamps and by local authorities on official correspondence.

People can vote for the symbol for their home city or county at www.plantlife.org.uk and give one more selection - perhaps for a favourite holiday region or childhood haunt.
