CROWDS of young acrobats have been queuing up at the door of the Clocktower in Mostyn, desperate for the chance to clown around. Every Wednesday the performing arts centre on the Coast Road comes alive with sure-footed youngsters from the age of seven to 17 keen to pick-up new skills during the summer circus programme. "They get to learn everything from juggling, diabolo, devil sticks, tightrope, walking globes and the trapeze,¹ said activities organiser Mike Owens. "We started the scheme last year and it really took off, so we extended the session to one full day per week this summer." But the team of five fully-qualified trainers are only able to let 35 budding acrobats and jugglers through the doors to enjoy the morning session between 10am and 12.30pm and the afternoon activities from 1-3.30pm. "The kids are literally queuing at the door to come in they absolutely love it,¹ said Mike, who is delighted that most of the children are now trained to performance level. The project worker, who also teaches juggling at the centre, is keen for businesses to help subsidise the cost of the successful scheme. "At the moment each session costs parents £2.50 and we¹re appealing for companies who could help with the expense to come forward," he said. "Some parents have two or three children desperate to come along, and it does get a bit much," he added. If a business does step in and picks up some of the cost, Mike is hopeful they can extend the successful scheme to include more sessions next year. The nimble youngsters who have put in hours of hard work are being rewarded with a huge party to mark the end of a memorable holiday on August 29. "We¹re having a sleep-over party for all the children in the Clocktower, which they are really looking forward to," said Mike. Anyone interested in subsidising the scheme can call 01745 562922. |
