Animal magic as zoo experiences baby boom

By John Houghton, North Wales Weekly News

A SUMMER of love has been under way at Colwyn Bay's Welsh Mountain Zoo, with a number of new arrivals.

Twin Geoffroy's marmosets, two Welsh mountain goats, a Bennett's wallaby and a litter of polecats have all been born this summer, to go with other arrivals from earlier in the year, which included six red squirrels - rescued under licence from an area of felled forest in Cumbria - and a group of African weaver finches.

These birds, famous for their elaborately woven nests, can be seen in the aviary near the marmosets.

But it's been bad news for Jazz the macaw, bred at the zoo last year, who suffered an injury to one wing in a fight in the aviary. The injury healed well, but Jazz will not be able to fly again. He has become something of a pet with the keepers and spends much of his time in the main zoo yard.

The bird has been "adopted" by Brian Cotterill, a member of the zoo's support association ZSW, who has also sponsored a special stand and shelter for him which means Jazz can come out into the zoo during the day.

The zoo also has a number of public benches available for sponsorship.

"A seat is a traditional way of remembering a departed loved one, but we're also keen to encourage sponsorship by anyone who wants to enjoy a particular spot in a favourite part of the zoo," said Nick Jackson, chairman of the ZSW.

The seats will be available to sponsor for £75, including a small name plaque. Anyone interested in sponsoring a bench isurged to get in touch with the zoo on 01492 532938.
