YOU can experience something of what it was like to quarry slate underground at Blaenau Ffestiniog's award-winning Llechwedd Slate Caverns - definitely not for the claustrophobic. There are two underground rides and free surface attractions. The Deep Mine tour begins with a ride on Britain's steepest passenger railway, continuimg with a walk through 10 sound and light sequences, led by the ghost of a Victorian miner. The Miners' Tramway is a guided tour with demonstrations of mining skills. In the Victorian Village reminted Victorian coins are available from The Old Bank and then you can spend them on a penn'orth of boiled sweets at the Corner Shop or a five-penny pint of beer at the village pub. There's a cafe, a coffee shop, the Miners' Arms and Plas Waenydd licensed restaurant. Llechwedd is one of the few tourist attractions open all year round (except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day). It is open daily from 10am. Last trains into mines are 5.15pm March to September and 4.15pm October to February. You could combine a visit to the caverns with a scenic train ride from either the Llandudno Junction or Porthmadog direction to Blaenau Ffestiniog.
