Too much stress puts people off buying houses

Sep 7 2005

Liverpool Echo

NEARLY one in 10 people have vowed never to move house again because they found buying a new home so stressful, says Yorkshire Bank.

A further two thirds said moving was highly stressful, with finding the right property seen as the biggest nightmare.

Nearly four out of 10 people said they had struggled to find a property that met their requirements, while one in three people claimed they avoided homes that were part of a chain.

Packing everything into cardboard boxes was seen as being the second most stressful

element, followed by waiting for the estate agent to phone you back and say your offer had been accepted, and selling your own property.

More than a quarter of people said they had found it difficult to curb their spending to save for a deposit, while others found it

frustrating waiting to exchange contracts.

Other aspects of moving which people disliked were unpacking everything in their new home, waiting for the surveyor's report, finding the best mortgage deal and finding a good solicitor.

Stress psychologist Dr David Lewis claims one of the reasons people find moving house so stressful is that a lot of things are outside their control.

At the same time, moving is often physically exhausting, which makes it harder to stay on top of stress and the emotional upheaval.
