YOU'VE given (or been given) notice. You've used our site to find your new home. Now use our essential guide to making the moving process as pain-free as possible. To avoid potential pitfalls (see below), concentrate on what needs to be done and when you need to do it. Use the timeline to help you plan your move in easy stages. We have also compiled a checklist of people you need to contact and inform of your new address and moving date. Agree a leaving date with your landlord and arrange to move out. If you have paid a deposit, arrange with the landlord to come round and check that, beyond reasonable wear and tear, no damage has been caused to the property, fixtures or fittings. Make sure your rent is not in arrears to avoid problems with the return of your deposit. If you are using one, hire a reputable removal firm (try asking friends or relatives for recommendations), and check whether they offer services such as insurance, storage etc. By avoiding moving during peak times (for instance most Fridays, bank holidays or school holidays), it may be possible to negotiate discounts with many removal firms. If you are moving to a smaller property, or from unfurnished to furnished accommodation, and need storage, arrange it now. Arrange transit insurance if required. Make sure your travel plans are in place for the moving day. If you are moving some distance it may be necessary to book a hotel. Send out change of address cards or use Fish4's free change of address service. Collect moving materials like boxes, tape and rope. Remembering padding and packing for fragile items like mirrors is especially important to ensure they don't break. Contact your telephone company to arrange for reconnection/installation of a new phone line at the address to which you are moving. Inform your utility suppliers that your tenancy is ending, and arrange for final meter readings to be taken. If necessary book time off from work. Start sorting out your possessions and throw away, or donate to charity, any unwanted or surplus items. POTENTIAL PITFALLS >>> |
