BACK in 1998, on advice from Halifax, my wife and I put £18,000 into a with-profits bond from Legal & General for five years. Recently we contacted Legal & General and were told this was not a five-year scheme, and if we surrendered we would face a market value penalty of 21pc, about £5,000. This was never mentioned when we invested and we cannot now find the Halifax adviser. more
