Toyota's new contenders
Toyota RAV4

Sep 1 2008

By Malcolm Robertshaw

A LEADING contender for Toyota in the September 1 new registration stakes is the provision of an extra diesel offering to the best-selling Auris TR line-up.

The 1.4 D-4D 90 engine adds to the 1.4-litre VVT-i and 1.6 VVT-I petrol units plus the 2.0 D-4D 130 diesel to present a four engine choice for the TR grade.

The D-4D 90 delivers maximum power of 89bhp at 3,800rpm and has a flat torque curve which makes it suited to stop/start urban work. The official combined cycle fuel consumption is a claimed 56.5mpg, CO2 emissions are 132g/km and there is a generous standard kit level available.

Pricing opens up at £14,145 for the Auris TR D-4D 90 three-door manual model rising to £15,195 for the TR 1.4 D-4D five-door with Multimode transmission.

Toyota also has a new sports-themed version of the RAV4, the SR180. Powered by the 175bhp 2.2 D-4D diesel engine, this version of Europe’s best-selling Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) stands on 18-inch alloys which fill the imposing extended wheel arches.

Run-flat tyre techonology does away with a spare wheel and a list of standard features includes Integrated Active Drive which combines Vehicle Stability Control and Hill Start Assist, electric sunroof, six-speaker sound system with six-speed autochanger, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity and rear parking sensors for an on-the-road price of £23,045.

The Toyota Verso medium MPV now comes with an even higher specification.

The Verso continues to be a great standard bearer for quality and value in the compact MPV sector and this latest range of the Verso SR range comes with an in-dash CD changer, rear privacy glass, front and rear parking sensors and five-spoke 16-inch alloys.

Pricing kicks off at £17,545 for the 1.8 VVT-I manual rising to £18,620 for the SR D-4D 140 manual while, for around a grand extra, Toyota’s ICE in-car entertainment set-up is an available option to help keep the kids entertained over the long haul.

Other models also include the likes of the Aygo three and five-door city car from £6,945 and £7,195, the ever popular Avensis in saloon, hatch and estate form priced from £14,495, £17,495 and £18,095 respectively.

In addition, there is the Land Cruiser 4x4 in three and five-door mode from £27,700 and £29,200, the ever popular Yaris hatchback from £9,425 and the hi-tec Prius with the hybrid powertrain costs from £17,777.
