A PROMINENT MP has incensed ramblers after erecting a “private property” sign on a footpath running through his land. Deputy speaker of the House of Commons Sir Michael Lord has been accused of trying to stop people walking through his caravan park to access Traeth Bychan, which lies between Benllech and Moelfre. But Sir Michael, 68, who owns Penrhyn Point park, says the sign was only put up to stop people wandering off the path and he has now promised a rethink to make this clear to walkers. Paul Brown, head of Ynys Môn Rambling Association, said: “This path has been walked unhindered for more than 100 years and is an established public right of way so to find this sign erected was very surprising. “People see ‘private property’ and many turn back believing this prevents them from walking on the path and from accessing the beach, it has caused quite a lot of upset here.” There have also been complaints that people fishing from the headland at Traeth Bychan have been told to stop and moved along. Tory MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich Mr Lord, who has been coming to Anglesey since he was a child, said: “I have no issue with people using the path but there is a problem when people are straying from the path and coming onto the site. “People do stray off the path at times and when told most are very helpful, others can be less helpful though I have had no altercations with any ramblers over the path. “I will have a rethink about the sign and add something that makes it clear this is designed to keep people on the path, not stop them using the footpath. “All I want to do is keep people on the designated public footpath, it is unfair on my family and the other families staying at the park if people are walking around where they want on the site. There are also security and safety issues involved here. “I have now already contacted coastal path officer Rosie Frankland to discuss this and will look at changing the sign.” owen.hughes |
