Splashing out on aqua park

Jul 25 2007

by Ffion Jackson, Holyhead and Anglesey Mail

A STATE-of-the-art aqua centre could be set to make a huge splash in Holyhead as part of a £10million double leisure complex in the town.

The proposal was revealed in a national report by the Sports Council of Wales, proposing massive improvements to sporting facilities across Anglesey.

The aqua park, described as an “iconic aquatic development”, would be situated on the Newry Beach waterfront.

One design example put forward features an indoor and outdoor pool, slides, jacuzzis, a fitness suite, relaxation area and a training pool for sport professionals.

That indoor leisure pool would feature wild water channels, water cannons, waterfalls, bubble beds, and swimming access to an outdoor lagoon.

A dry leisure facility is also proposed for the secondary school site, Safle Cybi, across from the current Millbank sporting facility.

The plans suggest that Holyhead Leisure Centre, currently located out-of-town in Kingsland, would be relocated to the two new sites within the next five years.

It is believed that this kind of “wet and dry” complex, coupled with a national centre of excellence in weightlifting and boxing also hoped to be built at Millbank, would make Holyhead a top sporting venue in Wales.

The Sports Council of Wales report also proposes refurbishment of Amlwch Leisure Centre, and an extensive revamp and re-modelling of Plas Arthur in Llangefni.

The report went before the council executive in June, where members agreed to the recommendations made in the document with regard to Holyhead, Amlwch and Llangefni.

Councillor Derlwyn Hughes, sport and leisure portfolio holder says the next step for Holyhead is to draw up detailed plans and costing for the aqua centre and dry facility, followed by a public consultation.

He estimated that a project to construct the two centres could be around the £10million mark.

Cllr Hughes said: “It’s an exciting idea, and we’d like to hear people’s opinions on this kind of centre.

“It would be part of regeneration in Holyhead and of leisure facilities across Anglesey.

“There are a lot of things to make Newry Beach an ideal place for an iconic centre like this, the aqua centre could be a landmark building, and of course a facility like this would help in a bid for the island games.

“However, for the island as a whole, regeneration like this could catapult Anglesey to the top of the Welsh sporting league.”
