Great Lakes plant death of contract worker, 60

Jan 26 2005

by Elgan Hearn, North Wales Weekly Newspapers series

INVESTIGATIONS will be undertaken by the Police and Health and Safety Executive into the death of a contractor working at the former Great Lakes Chemical Plant last week.

Late on Thursday afternoon, Anthony Hoare, 60, from Litherland, Liverpool was hit by a forklift truck on the site at Amlwch, last Thursday, January 20.

A post-mortem was carried out at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor and an inquest has been opened and adjourned with a date for a hearing, yet to be set.

Mr Hoare was part of a 12-man team of specialist contractors from Widnes-based firm Routledge, who have been dismantling parts of the works, since November.

The Great Lakes Chemical plant, known as Octel to locals, had produced bromide-based chemicals for over 50 years before closing with a loss of 100 jobs last April.

The site has been bought by American firm Canatxx who plan to use the site to convert liquid natural gas (LNG) piped ashore from tankers moored off Amlwch.
