ANGLESEY AM Ieuan Wyn Jones has paid tribute to charismatic former Plaid Cymru president Gwynfor Evans - who died last week aged 92. Mr Jones said Mr Evans, Plaid's first-ever MP, was an inspiration to himself and thousands of other Welsh people. "Gwynfor Evans was my great inspiration as a young man in politics," said Mr Jones. "His dedication to the cause of Wales, his determination and strength of character inspired me and many others to enter the political fray. "He was a man of tremendous moral courage and was always prepared to speak out on issues of peace as well as matters of great national concern." Plaid Cymru became a modern political party under the guidance and leadership of Mr Evans, who became Plaid's first MP when he won a by-election in Carmarthen in July 1966. Mr Jones added: "As well as being a man of high moral principle, he was a very pragmatic politician, dedicating his political path to the cause of constitutional politics. "He always knew that we needed to secure the votes of the people of Wales to achieve a proper Parliament for our people. "He also found time to encourage the younger generation to take up the cause of Wales. "His personal acts of kindness to me throughout my political career will remain with me as very fond memories of a remarkable man," he added. |
