SIX middle-aged men, including one from Old Colwyn and one from Penmaenmawr, were jailed for a total of 17 and a half years on Tuesday after it was revealed they indulged in sexual acts with a 13-year-old girl on the beach at Llanddulas and Pensarn. A judge told them they had treated the girl like a sex object without any consideration for her feelings or welfare - and a film showed that on one occasion sex continued even though she could barely stay awake. But the evil paedophile who touted the under-age schoolgirl to have sex with strangers has not yet been sentenced. A judge ordered a psychiatric report in the case of Frederick Lawlor, of Marine Road, Abergele, who also advertised the services of the girl in a magazine and abused her himself. Judge Merfyn Hughes agreed to the request from Lawlor's barrister Richard Orme for a report and said that while there was no mental illness, it would investigate the extent of any personality disorder, and address the question of risk for the future. Lawlor, 52, admitted four specimen counts of sexual activity with a child, seven of taking indecent photographs and seven of causing a child to engage in sexual activity with another. The case against his neighbour Gary Owen, 55, who is married and lived in the same block of flats as Lawlor, was adjourned for a pre-sentence report. Owen was the only one who paid for sex and he has a previous conviction for sex offences against a girl aged 12, for which he was previously jailed for six years. The judge said that a report was needed to assess the extent of the very obvious risk that he represented to young children. Judge Hughes, sitting at Mold Crown Court, who had to watch a compilation of sick films made by Lawlor and others, said that for more than a year, each of the six defendants to be sentenced had systematically sexually abused the young girl when she was 13 and 14. "It is recognised by this court that abuse would not have been possible were it not for the contact of the defendant Frederick Lawlor," the judge said. But their culpability in this "catalogue of abuse", while very much less than that of Lawlor, required immediate custody in each case. "Had any of you stopped to think, each of you would have realised she was under 16. "Although she was sexually mature, she had the appearance of a girl of only 13 or 14 and her immature behaviour would have been confirmation of that fact." The judge was satisfied that each of the defendants knew she was indulging in sexual activity with them under the direction and control of Lawlor, and with the exception of Ronald Roche and John Mc-Coy, both of Abergele, the others willingly took part in the making of indecent videos and DVDs which depicted sexual activity with a child. Whiletheywouldnothavebeeninvolvedin the distribution of such material, there was clearly a ready market for them, he said. "The damage each of you have done to that girl may never be known until many years have passed. "Each of you treated her as a sexual object without any consideration whatsoever for her feelings, or the consequences to her of your behaviour." There was little mitigation, apart from the fact they had pleaded guilty. qRichard Alan White, 58, of Ellis Avenue, Old Colwyn, who has one previous conviction for indecency in public, admitted three charges of sexual activity with a child involving intercourse and one of taking indecent photographs. He was jailed for three years and six months. nRonald William Roche, 49, of Heol Afon, Abergele - previously jailed for nine years for robbery - admitted one charge of sexual activity with a child which fell short of intercourse and he was jailed for two years and three months. qBatchelor Eric Mark Craven, 47, of Nant Uchaf, Fairy Glen Road, Penmaenmawr, a vehicle trader, admitted four charges of sexual activity with a child, two of taking indecent photographs and one of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. He was jailed for four years. nRonald Albert Farrington, 45, of Bidston View, Birkenhead, was jailed for three years after admitting two charges of sexual activity with a child which included one act of intercourse and two of taking indecent photographs. qJohn Edward McCoy, 50, of Ffordd y Morfa, Abergele, married with two children and of no previous convictions, admitted two charges of sexual activity with a child which involved intercourse. He admitted having sex with the girl in the back of a car at Llanddulas beach while she performed oral sex on another man. He was jailed for three years. nDavid William Forshaw, 41, of Water Street, Rhyl, who also has no previous convictions, admitted one charge of sexual activity with a child not involving intercourse and one of taking photographs. He was jailed for one year and nine months. All were placed on the sex offenders' register for life, apart from Roche who has to register for 10 years. RICHARD WHITE, OLD COLWYN : THE judge said White was involved with the girl on three occasions - first in a flat when he was covertly filmed having sex with her, and secondly when the girl and Lawlor visited his own home and the sex he had with her was filmed. White had suggested they travel to a nudist beach near Harlech, where he intended to repeat his behaviour with the girl. When they got there, he tried to engage other women in the activity but resorted to having sex with the girl in public, with other men watching. White claimed he was unaware of the coercion the girl was under; the judge said White was aware of her position, but not the degree of that coercion. It was also claimed he was not aware she was under 16. White also had a previous conviction for indecency in public. ERIC CRAVEN, PENMAENMAWR : "NOT only did you have extensive sexual contact with the girl, but you made your own video and instructed her as to how she should behave during the course of them," the judge told Craven. Craven admitted four incidents of intercourse on two visits, one at a flat provided by Lawlor, another at his own flat where he not only filmed her, but encouraged her to have sex with Lawlor. "Having watched a video extract it is quite obvious you realised when you arrived there that she was under 16." Craven was of previous good character. "I accept you didn't set out to look for an opportunity to have sex with a young child but it was soon clear to you that she was under 16. Thereafter, you took an active role in the activity and the filming of that disgusting behaviour." RONALD ROCHE, ABERGELE : THE judge said Roche had visited Llanddulas beach where he met Lawlor and the girl, they invited him back to a flat, and there he took part in sexual activity with the girl, which was covertly filmed. "You are described as a voyeur who expressed the view that as adults are concerned, anything goes," he said. The judge didn't accept he was unaware of the coercion she was under. He accepted that Roche had not been seeking sexual activity with a child, and it had not developed into full intercourse. RONALD FARRINGTON, BIRKENHEAD : FARRINGTON had contacted Lawlor through a magazine in order to have sex with an adult female, but he had sex with the young girl. A film showed the girl being abused by Farrington when she was so tired she couldn't stay awake. "The fact is you returned on three occasions for sexual activity with that child. The pre-sentence report indicated you don't accept responsibility for ensuring she was of legal age. "It indicates to me you are minimising the seriousness of these offences." His two charges involved one act of intercourse. JOHN McCOY, ABERGELE : McCOY had sex with the girl on two occasions, the first at a flat, which was covertly filmed by Lawlor. The second was when he had intercourse with her in the back of a car at Llanddulas beach. "You were living a lifestyle which involved visiting areas for the purposes of both observing and taking part in sexual activity," said the judge. q DAVID FORSHAW, RHYL : FORSHAW, whose offences didn't involve intercourse, had no previous convictions but was visiting areas such as Llanddulas beach in order to observe and take part in sexual activity. An indecent image of the girl was found on Forshaw's computer. Forshaw became involved in an incident which was filmed where five men were abusing the girl at the same time. "You became involved with her in a public place and encouraged other men to abuse her," the judge said. Hunt for the other perverts THE court heard that Frederick Lawlor was a violent man who was previously jailed for six years after he put live electrical wires in a bath, held a former partner under the water and stabbed her. He led men into thinking he was into wife-swapping by placing adverts in the magazine Loot. But he then offered them the schoolgirl, who he controlled and corrupted, and Mold Crown Court heard they were too weak and lacked the moral fibre to resist. It emerged that Lawlor originally denied being involved and said he found sex boring. When he was warned on one occasion about taking the girl, when inappropriately dressed, down to a beach late at night, he took exception and even reported officers to the chief constable, complaining they were harassing him. Some of the men were filmed while taking part in sex sessions in the open on Llanddulas or Pensarn beaches, at the time a favourite spot for "dogging" - perverts watching others having sex. The girl was also abused, sometimes by a number of middle-aged men at the same time, in the open, in the back of a car, or in a flat. Officers are continuing their investigation and are determined to bring others to justice. The girl has told police she had sex with about 50 men, all organised by Lawlor, and the films show at least 17 men, but some have so far not been identified. Now officers are planning to put their faces on the BBC Crimewatch programme so the public can help track them down. Police officers also have the DNA of five men as yet unaccounted for. Proceedings have already been started against three others. |
