Siblings join forces for an adventure

Feb 16 2007

By Rachel Barrows, Flintshire Chronicle

A BROTHER and sister are flying out to Nicaragua to distribute aid and forge links with the Central American country.

David and Lizzie McKnight will join a 10-stong delegation from the Wales Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign (NSC) when they travel tomorrow.

David, 30, from Rhosesmor is an international officer with UNISON and a community development worker for Communities First in Bryn Gwalia.

He joined the Wales NSC in 2000 after attending a conference and this will be his fourth visit to the country.

Nicaragua is the second poorest nation of the Americas and David is looking forward to seeing the changes brought about by the recently elected Sandinista government.

This will be 18-year-old Lizzie's second visit to Nicaragua.

The former Flint St Richard Gwyn pupil from Mynydd Isa was the youngest ever member of a Wales NSC to visit the country in 2005.

She has been accepted to study International Development at Leeds University in September.

The Wales NSC was established in the 1980s to help address Nicaragua's economic problems and provide moral support.

The delegation also includes Kirsten Buchanan, 29, from Wrexham and other members from Ruthin, Pontypridd, Carmarthen, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Penygroes and Liverpool.

During the trip, the group will stay with families in a remote village called Kukra Hill, where they will see Action Aid's clean water project in action.

Lizzie said: 'It will be really nice to see the changes since my last visit and the experience will be very helpful for when I start my degree.'
