Protest group aim to stop lorry park site

Feb 23 2007

By Clare Hickie, Flintshire Chronicle

CAMPAIGNERS preparing to fight plans for a huge lorry park have formed a protest group.

A proposal by Mostyn Estates to develop a truck stop next to junction 31 of the A55 at Caerwys has angered people living in the surrounding area.

The development would include space for 36 lorries, five coaches, seven caravans and trailers and 120 cars on the Ffrith y Garreg Wen site.

Residents from Trelawnyd, Caerwys and the five villages of Whitford, Carmel, Gorsedd, Lloc and Pantasaph came together on Monday evening to form an official protest committee called Stop the Truck Stop Action Group 31 (Stag 31).

Berwyn Roberts, of Caerwys, was elected chairman and Julie Lewis, of Trelawnyd, chosen as secretary at the meeting held at the Dragon's Rest cafe, which is next to junction 31.

Members says their biggest fear is pollution from the lorry park would poison a massive underground lake, which lies below the site and provides fresh water for the area.

They are meeting again on Monday and are sending out invitations to chairmen of surrounding town and community councils.

A Stag 31 spokesman said: 'The main aim of the group is to raise public awareness that this development is planned and we are studying the impact it would have on the villages.'

Flintshire County Council confirmed they have received an application for a lorry park, but are waiting for more information before the official consultation process begins.

Peter Aubrey, of Mostyn Estates, said: 'There is an urgent established need for a lorry park on the A55 and this is an optimum location for it.

'There is also no provision for coaches to draw up on the A55 and this will provide a stop for them as well.' nSeparate planning applications have also been submitted for the Lloc side of junction 31 of the A55.

Cresmore Properties wants to build a petrol filling station, hotel, pub restaurant, manager's accommodation and car parking on land surrounding the McDonald's restaurant.
