Pesda concert strikes a chord

Jun 23 2003

By Hywel Trewyn, Daily Post

A CONCERT starring the Super Furry Animals and former Catatonia frontwoman Cerys Matthews was last night branded a "phenomenal success".

The Pesda Roc concert staged on Saturday at Bethesda was part of a year-long celebration to mark one of the longest strikes in history.

Some 3,000 Penrhyn quarry workers embarked on a three-year-long strike in 1900 in a bitter dispute over union membership, conditions and pay.

Although the concert attracted 6,000 fans, police last night said there had been only one arrest for threatening behaviour.

A North Wales Police spokesman said: "It was quiet as far as the police were involved." One of the organisers, North Wales deputy director of the Workers' Educational Association, Bethan Russell Owen said: "The concert on Saturday was a great success.

"It showed that there was co-operation and a partnership between the organisers, police, security staff and volunteers."

With just one bar to serve the thirsty concert-goers, she admitted there had been some problems but claimed they had been "very quickly overcome".

Another concert was staged yesterday organised by the WEA at Dol Ddafydd. It featured Celt, Bryn Fôn, Siân James, Dafydd Iwan and the Penrhyn Male Voice Choir.
