It's a right old dust-up

Jul 24 2003

By David Greenwood, Daily Post

ENVIRONMENTAL health bosses were last night trying to determine the source of a mysterious dust cloud which descended on a North Wales village.

Residents in the centre of Gaerwen woke up to find a sprinkling of white dust covering their cars. The dust gradually turned brown, leaving tiny marks on their vehicles.

Villagers have raised fears it could be dangerous or corrosive.

Councillor William Jones said he had received a number of complaints and had raised the matter with Anglesey County Counci l' s environmental health department.

He said: "I haven't seen the dust. It has been washed away by rain showers. But I have seen the tiny marks it has left behind on cars.

"Those affected seem to be living in a line from the local industrial estate which passes close to the village school and on towards the church. An investigation is ongoing."

Rev Idris Jones told the Daily Post: "It is very peculiar. People are quite concerned because at the moment nobody seems to know what it is.

"It is worrying because we could have been breathing it in. Who knows? It could be harmful, even corrosive."

Mr Jones added: "I have lived in Gaerwen for 30 years and have never seen anything like this before.

"I have a dark blue metallic Vauxhall and the dust has left silver marks, almost like scales from a trout. I am just wondering if the dust has eaten through the paintwork."

Postmaster Noel Thomas said: "Only a few parts of the village have been affected.

Here we are fine but then a short distance away they have had the dust."

Mr Thomas, a former county councillor, added: "I don't think anyone quite knows where the dust has come from. One theory is it arrived over the weekend with the rain."

An Anglesey County Council spokesman said: "Our environmental health section has received a number of complaints from people living in a localised pocket within Gaerwen and an investigation is now under way to find the source of the problem."
