Rachel is thriving on expert US treatment

Jul 29 2003

By David Greenwood Daily Post

SLEEP disorder experts in the United States have finally identified a North Wales girl's life threatening condition.

Now Rachel Williams, who left Llanfairpwll, Anglesey with her parents and brother for a new life in America just three months ago is undergoing treatment at a specialist clinic in Columbus, Ohio, where they are about buy a house.

Since she was just two-years-old Rachel, who celebrated her 12th birthday with a VIP visit to Columbus Zoo earlier this month, has suffered from a form of sleep apnea, which basically means her brain tells her to stop breathing while she sleeps.

She can have dozens of seizures a night, some of which are violent.

Now doctors at the clinic have identified these as seizures with "complex automatic behaviour".

Mum Debbie, 42, told the Daily Post: "They are keeping a close eye on her and put her on a course of drugs.

"At the moment she is only on them at night but she will be taking them during the day as well. She has improved a lot and isn't jumping up at night.

"She is beginning to look a picture of health, something we never thought we would ever see.

"For the first time in her life she has been able to enjoy 'sleep overs' with friends she has made here.

"She is having a great start to her new life of more freedom and we are convinced she is on the way to becoming a normal young girl."

The family sold their cottage home in Llanfairpwll before jetting off.

"We know it was a big step to take but it is something we had to do for Rachel. After bringing her to a regional sleep disorder centre in Columbus eight months ago we became very disillusioned with what is on offer in North Wales and felt completely alone," said Debbie, who has been invited to train as a technician at the Ohio sleep centre.
